The technical stack behind it
A self-hosted Synapse (Matrix) homeserver runs inside your isolated environment. All server-to-server traffic travels over an encrypted WireGuard backbone.
Element/Synapse runs as an isolated Matrix homeserver per organisation. Messages use the Olm/Megolm encryption protocol for true end-to-end encryption, even the server operator cannot read message content. Bridges to WhatsApp/Signal run as separate, sandboxed processes.
Good Fit If…
Your team coordinates sensitive work and wants messaging that doesn't depend on a platform that could suspend accounts or scan content.
Not a Good Fit If…
Your entire partner network refuses to install any new app and bridging isn't acceptable, in that case a hybrid approach needs a separate conversation.
